Side by side it's readily apparent who the teacher is and who the student was. I love El Mocambo, but IMO it's light years from equaling Band Of Gypsys. Hendrix was an original and a natural at what he did, all others are just copies.ĭon't get me wrong I'm a big fan of SRV's but he was no Hendrix! He did do a good job of copying Hendrix's tone in some instances. I have heard and seen all of SRV's stuff and have never heard anything original. Oh yeah! SRV learned all this knob turning and stuff from Hendrix. SRV was in his 30's before he started to get good. Hendrix invented this music and died at 27. What they don't understand is that I spent my whole life learning to copy some of Hendrix's easy songs. SRV did a fair job on some of Hendix's easy stuff but as SRV said. Hendrix on the other hand the only person I ever seen that could do justice to Hendrix was Eric Johnson. One reason I like SRV's music is that it is fairly easy for me to play. A lot of the songs he did he invented right on stage sometimes. They use to edit out a lot of the wild crazy over the top stuff back then. It's a shame there isn't more video of him. But if you wanted to see pure raw vibrant energy when Hendrix was cutting loose on stage he made SRV seem like a night at the morgue. It just flowed like magic from his finger tips. One thing about Hendrix, He didn't have to jump around and sweat to death and force his energy out. I think his playing and sound improved a geat deal after he stopped getting high. His playing was starting to flow evertlessly right before his death. To me he didn't start to get really good untill right before he died. SRV technique isn't new but he did use a lot of energy. The first time I ever heard a recording of SRV I thought my bass player was playing a recording of us. Don't be critical of people you hear that sound like SRV.
